Alyssa and her two brothers are the product of a broken home. She only has fleeting memories of her mother, who left the family for another marriage when she was very young. Her father is a dishonorably discharged soldier who hasn’t been able to hold steady work for decades, due to his emotional instability and virulent temper. Her much-older brother exhibit similar characteristics and are often unpredictable.
Alyssa takes more after her mother, though she doesn’t know it. Quiet, solemn, and reserved, Alyssa doesn’t readily fit into the family dynamic. She does well in school, not because she is highly intelligent, but more because her hardworking attitude. With everyone in her family prone to emotional outbursts, Alyssa tends to try to fly under the radar as much as possible, preferring to be unnoticed. She was always deeply bothered by the strange events that seemed to follow her around as a child. These were finally explained shortly after her eleventh birthday, when she received her Hogwarts letter and subsequent visit from a nice witch from the school. Her father is not supportive of her magical abilities, and at first refused to allow her to attend Hogwarts, but when informed of the dangers Alyssa would possess to herself and those around her if not properly trained, he reluctantly acquiesced to her departure.
She heads to Hogwarts with a conflicted mind. On one hand, she knows she should be happy about finally being able to control her abilities and finally getting some freedom from her unstable, fractured home environment, but she is also absolutely terrified of being alone and encountering so many unknown elements without so much as a friendly face.
